Califia Farms
As a plant-based dairy company, Califia can’t separate sustainability from what they do. Since producing oat and almond milk uses less water and land, and emits less greenhouse gas compared to dairy, we are already on the path to a more sustainable food system. But we know that simply making plant-based products is not enough. To affect real, lasting change, we need to set rigorous goals for our company in the short, medium, and long term. Their strategy to address farming practices and farmer livelihoods focuses on the priority crops that make up most of Califia’s direct purchased ingredients such as Almonds, Oats, Coffee, Cocoa, and Vanilla. Because Califia is plant-based, their GHG emissions and land-use requirements are inherently less than that of dairy and animal-based agriculture. However, they do have a climate footprint which is why they are focusing on improving sustainability in their transportation and packaging, as well as energy and water usage.
