Sunburst Trout Farms
Nancy and Tim Bass have been raising vegetables on this farm in Spring Hope, NC since 1993, but the land has been in the family since the early 1800s. They started growing a variety of vegetables in order to eventually transition from tobacco production, selling their vegetables to farmers markets. Nancy saw that farmers markets were beginning to trend upwards in popularity and that consumers were becoming more interested in where their food was coming from. Thanks to Nancy’s entrepreneurial spirit and foresight, she and Tim were instrumental in getting the Rocky Mount Farmers Market off the ground. Around 2004 they started one of North Carolina’s only greenhouse tomato production at the time. Their production rapidly increased as they cultivate 13,000 sq feet of greenhouse space on 100 acres of land. They are GAP certified and working on organic certification. They use wood-chip heating elements to heat the greenhouses instead of propane, and bumble bees to help pollinate the tomatoes! They lease some of their acreage to an organic farmer, and thanks to the organic farmer, Nancy and Tim have begun to see beneficial insects hanging out in their greenhouses.
